Study of requirements and definition of basic infrastructure for battery charging or exchange in connection to widespread use of electrical vehicles

Objetivo

Investigate which electrical vehicle categories are most likely to find a market in urban transportation and which measures (e.g. infrastructure, legislation) can help their market penetration. In addition different battery charging strategies for urban areas are investigated.

Although the main bottleneck for the introduction of electrical vehicles lies with development of cost effective batteries with high energy and power densities, other barriers for the introduction of electrical vehicles in urban areas do exist e.g. the infrastructure of towns which is not adapted to electrical vehicles. This study investigates this problem for Athens, Valencia and possibly other European towns.

CRES carries out a feasibility study for battery driven electrical vehicles in Athens: study of the potential for market penetration of vehicle categories, parking spaces and possibility for charging, charging strategies, measures which can help the penetration of electrical vehicles. The technical part of the charging strategy is studied : different charging technologies (e.g. speed, safety), possibilities for battery exchange, problems with the electricity grid (e.g. generation of harmonics, load pattern), design of an specific infrastructure for electrical vehicles. R&D on hardware, if required, will be done by ASINEL.
