Objective
The beneficiary is the government-owned Danish national railway organisation. The railway operations have left behind several sites (including gas depots and fuelling stations) which are polluted by oil and/or halogenated solvents. These sites represent a hazard to ground waters. As well, some of the substances leaked into the soil are carcinogenic. The behaviour and movements of such substances in the soils is not known.
The project aims to develop effective and environmentally optimal methods for remediating of soils and protecting ground waters at contaminated sites. A general decision-making model will be developed. It is this model that will be used with several clean-up methods suitable for different kinds of pollutants and soil types. Moreover, the project will evaluate the feasibility and economic effectiveness of different clean-up methods.
