Introduction of fungi in forest plantations. Demonstration project

Objective

The project intends to prove to the forestry sector the advantages of afforestation using trees inoculated with micorhyzae of high-quality edible fungi or mushrooms. Part of the project aims to estimate fungi production in local forests and to guarantee the selection of representative plots in the zone where the demonstration project will be set up.

The current low profitability of the Pyrenees forests is causing serious problems. Steps must be taken to revitalise the local economy in order to stabilise the population and thus maintain and protect the fragile environment and its rural surroundings.
Edible mushroom production may offer such a solution. Forestry plantations with tree species that are micorhyzaed with edible fungi will increase mushroom output, thus increasing the profitability of the forests without impinging on other uses of the area (wood production, tourism, recreation , etc.).

For this purpose, a draft study will be made of the physical environment, measuring climatic, soil and botanical variables. The plant will be purchased from commercial nurseries and examined in laboratory to guarantee its quality. In the second year, the progress of the targeted fungi micorhyzae will be monitored.
Current mushroom output will be estimated in the hills near the project plots in order to compare with the plots seeded with micorhyzaed plants. The final phase of the project will be a publicity campaign to demonstrate the applicability of afforestation with micorhyzaed plants in different geographic zones of the Community.
