Planning of Coastal Areas at the Gulf of Finland

Objective

The beneficiary is the regional environmental authority, responsible for law enforcement and supervision related to planning issues. Local municipalities carry out the actual planning work while the regional authority supervises and supports the work. Small municipalities often lack resources to carry out the necessary in-depth background work that good planning requires. The south coast archipelago is a particularly sensitive area due to its proximity to the capital and to intense pressure both from mobile boating tourism and increasing from the development of summer cottages. Additionally, cooperative efforts will be made with authorities running coastal zone planning in Estonia and Sweden.

Seven municipalities participate in the project. Together they cover a major part of the most attractive and sensitive archipelago areas along the south coast. The actual planning work will be carried out by the municipalities and their consultants. The plans will to ensure wide political and administrative support be approved by the local councils, then the Regional Environment Centre. The Regional Environment Centre will support the planning work and transmit information and arrange joint meetings between the participating planning groups.
