The Treatment of Landfill Leachate Using Peat

Objective

The objective is to demonstrate that innovative peat technology can be used as best available technology not entailing excessive cost (BATNEEC) for onsite treatment of landfill leachate on both active and closed landfills.

Following successful laboratory research and its application to a pilot plant at Laois County Council's Central Landfill, leachate treatment facilities will be constructed on an active landfill in County Laois (receiving 24,000 tonnes per annum) and a closed landfill in County Kerry. These leachate treatment facilities will demonstrate how peat filtration can be utilised under a range of site conditions.

The project involves a partnership between Laois County Council, Kerry County Council and the EPA to demonstrate the potential reproduction of this innovative, low-cost, low maintenance technology as a BATNEEC.
