The Forth Estuary form : a demonstration of effective integrated coastal zone

Objective

The objective is to demonstrate the effectiveness of a non-statutory management partnership in achieving integrated coastal zone management for the estuary and the Firth of Forth. As the Forth environment presents a wide range of environmental pressures and natural resources and is typical of large European estuaries, the outcomes and experience gained during this project will have a wide applicability throughout Europe.

The Forth Estuary Forum is a non-statutory management partnership established with the aim of achieving integrated coastal zone management for the Estuary and Firth of Forth to prevent ongoing environmental degradation. The project will facilitate, document and analyse the process undertaken by the Forth Estuary Forum and will develop a management strategy in partnership with all interest groups, aiming to resolve identified issues and conflicts. It will also implement integrated management with a programme of action plans through negotiation and voluntary agreements.

The expected outcomes of the project are: improved environmental protection; widespread commitment to sustainable use and development of the area; a management strategy with associated action plans; implemented action plans; and enhanced inter-regional, cross-sectoral, vertical and lateral consultation.
