Development of a beta Absorption equipment for filters to measure the Suspended Particulate Matter along with heavy metals

Objective

Realization of two beta absorption equipment for filters to measure the Suspended Particulate Matter along with heavy metals for the Flemish and Walloon networks. Ease further development of mandatory standardized measurements for various aspects of suspended particulate matter air pollution.

The project brings together the facilities and means of three institutions in Vlaanderen and Wallonie to realise prototypes of a beta Absorption equipment for filters to measure the Suspended Particulate Matter along with heavy metals (BASPM). Along with the existing auto-sampling XRF equipment for non-destructive heavy metal analysis on filters, the new device will enable the Flemish and Walloon networks to deliver both suspended particulate and various heavy metals daily values, for the same sampling points and with low cost sampling stations. However, with the absence of any commercially available equipment allowing for a routinely practicable dust weight uptake measurement of sampling filters with a new sampling standard, two different types of field devices will be compulsary for the mass of suspended particulate and the lead plus other heavy metals measurements. The consistent, efficient and low cost approach of the project, which could be followed by several significant air pollution measurement networks in Member states, will help to give a most consistent picture of the suspended particulate matter situation, possibly for various granulometric size cuts, thus preserving possibilities of further modulations of European ambient air quality regulations in the European Union if later wished.
