Objective
The objective of this project is the operation of a modular designed demonstration plant for the treatment of waste water in agri-foodstuffs industry to obtain closed water cycles by means of innovative treatment processes. The consumption of fresh water and the quantity of waste water can be considerably reduced by operating this plant. Drinking water quality is reached by this plant which is an essential reqjrement in this industry.
Now the research is completed and it is possible to install a demonstration plant to show the feasibility of this technology by treating two different types of low-contaminated waste water from the agri-foodstuffs industry: chiller shower water in the meat proceeding industry and vapour condensates from either beer production or dairy industry. The technology developed consists of a combination of treatment steps: pretreatment - membrane filtration (NF/RO) - UV oxidation/disinfection (alternative adsortion/disinfection). Through the completed research, it could be shown that the waste waters from the agri-foodstuffs industry, containing organic contamination of a COD smaller than 700 mg O2/l (e.g. fats, proteins, organic acids and aromatic compounds) as well as in some cases large concentrations of inorganic components (e.g. Na+, K+, Cl-) could be treated to such an extend that water with drinking water quality was obtained which met the requirements of standards in all EU countries (limitation for the concentration for inorganic, and organic components, as well microbiological parameters).
