Building the ECO-City : Ecologically sound development in local urban administration through cooperation between civic users and district government

Objective

The aim of this project is to demonstrate a range of steps towards a sustainable development in a part of central Copenhagen (approx. 30 000 inhabitants) through local collaboration between a newly developed government for the local district, and local NGO's. A manual will be produced and an Inter-European contact net will be established through which the project results and experience can be further developed and used throughout Europe.

Generally speaking, an efficient implementation of environmental issues has been reserved for smaller municipalities or communities. Urban areas in Europe as well as third countries can be characterised as environmentally overlooked areas; this is hardly appropriate since it is in the urban areas that the greatest consumption of resources takes place. Local administrations within City limits are obvious forums to solve this problem as the unit is smaller, and can be an example to follow for other part of the city.

The project includes the following tasks:

1. Establishment of cross-sectoral steering bodies for defining and implementing an urban environmental policy.
2. Development of an inter-European network of contacts and a manual for environmental measures.
3. Integration of environmental awareness in local planning and administration
4. Support for the start-up of local activities and productions based on environmentally sound principles.

Over the period of the project, several conferences, seminars and workshops will be carried out. All project partners are to participate actively in the regular conferences held by the European Environmental Committee. The European Environmental Committee Network will assist in the dissemination.
