INCREASED PIGMENT CONTENT OF PRINTING PAPERS

Objective

TO PRODUCE METHODS WHEREBY THE USE OF PIGMENTS TO REPLACE FIBRE IN PRINTING PAPERS CAN BE SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASED.

PREVIOUS WORK UNDER A DG XII CONTRACT HAS SHOWN THAT GIVEN THE RIGHT CONDITIONS, THE FILLER CONTENT OF PRINTING PAPERS CAN BE INCREASED TO 40 %.
THIS PROJECT WILL START BY DISCUSSING SPECIFICATIONS WITH USERS TO MAKE SURE REQUIREMENTS ARE FULLY KNOWN.

LAB. STUDIES WILL LOOK AT PULP SELECTION AND TREATMENT, AND WHEN THESE ARE OPTIMIZED, VARYING QUANTITIES OF CHALK AND CHINA CLAY WILL BE TRIED WITH DIFFERING RETENTION AIDS. STRENGHT ADDITIVES WILL BE STUDIED TO SEE HOW THE LOSS IN STRENGHT WITH LOADINGS WILL BE COMPENSATED.
ONCE OPTIMUM CONDITIONS ARE DETERMINED, PILOT PLANT AND FULL SCALE TRIALS WILL BE CARRIED OUT.
CURRENTLY, THE EEC PAPER INDUSTRY USES ABOUT 13 % FILLER OVERALL. TO INCREASE THIS TO 20 % WOULD REDUCE THE PULP IMPORT BILL BY 500000000 ECU.
