Objective
The objective of this research project is to contribute to the development of rational methods for the design of rubble mound breakwaters. The project concentrates on the analysis of breakage of armour made up of randomly placed, large unreinforced armour units and the interaction/correlation between important failure modes such as scour and instability of toe berm, main armour, wave wall, and rear slope instability.
The project methodology, although is mainly experimental, also includes advanced hydraulic model test techniques. Theoretical studies will include system reliability analyses of complete structures.
The expected achievements will make a significant contribution to the elaboration of more sound guidelines for coastal engineers, the use of which will result in structures free from the frequently seen unexpected failures.
