Intercomparison to validate calibration methods for hydrophones in the frequency range 10-315 kHz

Objective

The aim of the project is to carry out an intercomparison of hydrophone calibrations in order to validate existing standards and methods and to identify areas where improvements are required. The exercise will be an important first step towards establishing traceability for underwater acoustical measurements within Europe.

Three different types of hydrophones from different European suppliers will be circulated to eleven participating laboratories. Each participant will make measurements of the free-field sensitivity of each hydrophone in the frequency range 10-135 kHz using their own calibration procedures. Reference measurements will be made by the coordinator at the start and at the end of the intercomparison.
