Methods to improve the supply of marine organisms for pharmaceutical-related natural products chemistry

Objetivo

Prototypes of CAM stations from Dassault, EPFL, Openmind. - Prototypes of CNC with STEP-NC interface from OSAI and SIEMENS AG. - STEP-NC database (SW) for data maintenance from WZL Aachen - Specification of improved data model for ISO integration in ISO DIS 14649, AMT, Siemens AG, WZL, ISW. - Prototype demonstrations for the technologies milling, contouring, EDM from all partners. - Results of usability test for milling from DaimlerChrysler, Franci and Volvo. - Results of usability test for Wire-EDM from Wyss
Marine organisms are a rich source of potential and valuable new drugs. Obtaining enough specimens of species of interest without incurring great expense and environmental damage is, however, a major limitation to successfully exploiting this resource. Methods to improve the supply of quality of organisms for drug-related natural products research represent a market for aquaculture companies and as an opportunity for European SME's involved in such research to developed competitive advantages over American and Japanese rivals in the race to discover and market new drugs. The research project will concentrate on two main areas; - the adaptation of existing and the development of new aquaculture techniques for the production of non-food related invertebrates such as sponges, bryozoans and tunicates. - the development of methods to culture bacterial symbionts from marine invertebrates which contain interesting chemicals that may be of bacterial origin. The project will last two years and involve SME's whose main activities involve the exploitation of natural marine resources and drug companies.
