Objective
THE RESEARCH PROJECT WILL BE CARRIED OUT AS PART OF A JOINT PROGRAMME WHICH HAS BEEN COORDINATED BY THE ENTWICKLUNGSGEMEINSCHAFT HOLZBAU OF THE DGFH, MUNICH IN COLLABORATION WITH BAM, BERLIN. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS THE "IMPROVEMENT OF THE QUALITY AND WEATHER RESISTANCE OF GLUE-LAMINATED BEAMS FOR EXTERIOR APPLICATIONS WITH AND WITHOUT SOIL CONTACT".
TO OBTAIN BASIC INFORMATION ON THE GLUEABILITY OF SPRUCE WOOD WITH OTHER TIMBER SPECIES OF DIFFERENT DESIGYN, SORPTION AND SWELLING, MAINLY:
. INFLUENCE OF DIRECTION OF ANNUAL CROSS RINGS
. INFLUENCE OF THE THICKNESS OF INDIVIDUAL BOARDS
. STRENGTH OF FINGER JOINTS
LABORATORY TESTS ARE PLANNED, INCLUDING THE INFLUENCE OF VARYING CLIMATES ON THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF THE GLUELINE.
IN ADDITION SOME TESTS ARE PLANNED ON THE GLUEABILITY OF SPRUCE WITH PRESSURE TREATED PINE SAP WOOD.
IN EUROPE IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TIMBER SPECIES FOR GLULAM BUT IT DOES NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT RESISTANCE AGAINST FUNGAL ATTACK.
THEREFORE SUITABLE TREATMENT IS NECESSARY FOR OUTSIDE USE.
THE USE OF WOOD PRESERVATIVES,HOWEVER,IS VERY DIFFICULT, AS SPRUCE IS REFRACTORY TO PENETRATION DUE TO ITS SPECIFIC ANATOMIC PROPERTIES AND SO FAR NO SUITABLE TREATING METHOD CAN BE REALIZED, AN ALTERNATIVE COULD BE THE INTRODUCTION OF TIMBER SPECIES WITH HIGH NATURAL DURABILITY FOR THOSE PARTS OF GLULAM, WHICH MAY BE ATTACKED. FOR THIS, INVESTIGATIONS ARE NECESSARY ON PROBLEMS WHICH RESULT FROM THE DIFFERENT PROPERTIES OF VARIOUS TIMBER SPECIES, MAINLY SORPTION, STRENGTH, AND RHEOLOGY.
FIRST TESTS ARE RUNNING ON BASIC PRINCIPLES OF FORMING THE SPECIMENS AND ON CORRELATIONS BETWEEN GLUE AND TIMBER SPECIES.
