CHEMICALLY MODIFIED LIGNIN FOR USE IN SLOW-RELEASE-FORMULATIONS AND OTHER POLYMER OUTLETS

Objective

TO CHEMICALLY MODIFY LIGNIN FOR A BULK OUTLET IN SLOW-RELEASE FORMULATIONS (PESTICIDES, PHEROMONES, ANTIFOULING PAINTS ETC.) AND IN WATER-SWELLABLE POLYMERS FOR VARIOUS APPLICATIONS.

SEVERAL STEPS ARE FORESEEN:

1. ANALYSIS OF LITERATURE DATA, ESPECIALLY FROM LESS AVAILABLE SOURCES ON LIGNIN MODIFICATION.

2. CHARACTERISATION OF LIGNINS AND THE EFFECT OF VARIATION IN LIGNINS ON THE PROPERTIES OF THE MODIFIED PRODUCT.

3. CHEMICAL MODIFICATION OF LIGNIN ALONG THE FOLLOWING LINES:

3.1. INVESTIGATION OF SOME SELECTIVE OXIDANTS AND REDUCTANTS, AS DEVELOPED AT ITC-TNO.

3.2. THE USE OF LIGNIN AS SUCH OR MODIFIED LIGNIN AS DESCRIBED IN 3.1. OR BY OTHER CHEMICAL MEANS AS A FEEDSTOCK FOR THE PRODUCTION OF POLYMERIC CONDENSATION PRODUCTS OR GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION PRODUCTS.

3.3. THE USE OF ORGANOSOLV LIGNIN AS SUCH OR AFTER CONVERSION IN A MODIFIED POLYMER AS DESCRIBED IN 3.2. AS A FEEDSTOCK FOR THE FOLLOWING SLOW RELEASE APPLICATIONS:
3.3.1. PESTICIDES (GENERAL)
3.3.2. FUNGICIDES, CONTAINING BIOORGANOTIN MOIETIES (R = PHENYL, BUTYL, CYCLOHEXYL) ALSO FOR ANTIFOULING PAINTS FOR THE INHIBITION OF GROWTH OF ALGAE AND BARNACLES.
