MECHANICAL JOINTS IN STRUCTURAL TIMBERWORK - INFORMATION FOR PROBABILISTIC DESIGN

Objective

THE OBJECTIVES ARE THE DETERMINATION OF THE ACQUISITION OF INFORMATION REQUIRED TO ENABLE NATIONAL, EUROPEAN AND CIB CODES OF PRACTICE FOR THE DESIGN OF MECHANICAL TIMBER JOINTS TO BE WRITTEN ON A PROBABILITY BASIS.

THE MATERIALS ARE:A).PLAIN WIRE NAILS BETWEEN 2.65 AND 6.00 M.M. DIAMETER.
B).ISO METRIC BLACK BOLTS BETWEEN M8 AND M20.
C).TIMBER SPECIES: EUROPEAN REDWOOD (PINE) EUROPEAN WHITEWOOD (SPRUCE)
CANADIAN (SPRUCE-PINE-FIR)
D).PLYWOODS: FINNISH BIRCH FINNISH SPRUCE
CANADIAN DOUGLAS FIR
FRENCH PINE

THE METHODS CONSIST IN :

I). EVALUATION OF INFORMATION ON MECHANICAL JOINT PERFORMANCE INCLUDING A STUDY OF THE SENSITIVITY OF STRUCTURE OR COMPONENT PERFORMANCE TO DEFORMATION. STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS SUCH AS TRUSSED RAFTERS, BUILTUP BEAMS AND COLUMNS, RACKING PANELS AND STRESSED SKIN PANELS.
II). THE PREDICTION OF JOINT PROPERTIES WILL BE MADE BY NUMERICAL MODELS VALIDATED AGAINST RESULTS FROM JOINT TESTS PERFORMED AT TRADA.

THIS RESEARCH IS PERFOMED IN COORDINATION WITH THE TECHNISCHE HOGESCHOOL DELFT (NETHERLANDS).
