Objective
THE EXPERIMENT WILL BE CONDUCTED ON OLD NORWEGIAN SPRUCE ON SANDY SOIL WITH THE OBJECT OF ELUCIDATING :
A) HOW GREAT AN EXCESS INCREMENT MAY BE OBTAINED BY PROGRAMMED IRRIGATION,
B) HOW GREAT THE INTERACTION IS BETWEEN FERTILIZATION AND IRRIGATION,
C) THE ASPECTS OF THE ECOLOGY OF NORWAY SPRUCE THAT MANIFEST THEMSELVES IN DROUGHT DEATH, INSECT ATTACKS AND ATTACKS OF FOMES ANNOSUS AND OTHER PATHOGENS.
THE COMBINATION OF IRRIGATION AND FERTILIZATION OF OLD NORWAY SPRUCE ON POOR SANDY SOILS WILL MOST LIKELY RESULT IN SUCH CONSIDERABLE EXCESS INCREMENTS OF VALUABLE WOOD THAT A GOOD PROFITABILITY OF IRRIGATION IS POSSIBLE, NOT LEAST IF A POSITIVE EFFECT ON THE STABILITY OF THE STAND IS TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION.
FOLLOWING TREATMENTS REPLICATED THREE TIMES:
A) CONTROL
B) IRRIGATION
C) FERTILIZATION
D) IRRIGATION AND FERTILIZATION.
IRRIGATION WILL BE CARRIED THROUGH ACCORDING TO ALREADY PUBLISHED METHODS (HOLSTENER-JORGENSEN AND HOLMSGAARD, 1975).
THE AIM IS THAT THE IRRIGATED PLOTS HAVE POTENTIAL EVAPOTRANSPIRATION ALL THROUGH THE VEGETATION PERIOD (APRIL 1ST TO SEPTEMBER 30TH).
AN 80 YEAR OLD NORWAY SPRUCE STAND HAS BEEN FOUND FOR THE TRIAL. EACH PLOT WILL CONTAIN ABOUT 90 TREES WHICH ARE TO BE MEASURED EVERY YEAR (BASAL AREA, HEIGHT INCREMENT).
BY THE END OF THE CONTRACT PERIOD INCREMENT CORES WILL BE TAKEN FOR TREE-RING ANALYSES WHICH WILL BE USED FOR COVARIANCE-ANALYSES TO ELUCIDATE THE INFLUENCE OF PRE-ESTABLISHMENT GROWTH ON GROWTH DURING THE EXPERIMENTAL PERIOD.
