ZINC-BASED ALLOYS TO REPLACE TIN SOLDERS AND SILVER BRAZES.

Objective

DEVELOPMENT OF IMPROVED JOINING ALLOYS, BASED ON ZINC, TO REPLACE TIN SOLDERSAND BRAZES, WITH SUBSEQUENT SAVING IN THE CONSUMPTION OF THESE METALS.

A RIEW WILL BE CARRIED OUT OF THE EXISTING TECHNOLOGY FOR ZINC SOLDERS TO JOIN ALUMINIUM, THE MORE RECENT STUDIES TO JOINT COPPER, AND THE ZINC DIE CASTING TECHNOLOGY. THE ALLOYNG ELEMENT CONCENTRATIONS IN ZINC ALLOYS WILL BE SELECTED FOR STUDY, AND THESE WILL INCLUDE AL, CU, MG, SR, NI, MN, CR AND AG. THE WETTING BEHAVIOUR OF SELECTED ALLOYS WILL BE STUDIED USING THE VEDRTICAL PLATE-WETTING BALANCE AND SESSILE DROP SPREADING TECHNIQUES.
EXPERIMENTS WILL BE CONDUCTED IN AIR UNDER FLUX AND IN INERT ATMOSPHERES ON WORKPIECES OF STEELS AND COPPER ALLOYS. CONTACT TIMES, TEMPERATURES AND SURFACE PREPARATION WILL BE STUDIED. THE INTERACTIONS OF THE MELTS WITH THE MICROANALYSIS. THE FLOW BEHAVIOUR OF THE ALLOYS USING VISCOMETER AND GAP PENETRATION TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT AND GAP SIZES WILL BE VARIED TO ASSESS THE EFFECT ON PENETRATION RATES AND BRAZE-WORKPIECE INTERACTION.

STANDARD BUTT AND LAP JOINT WILL BE MADE UNDER INERT GAS AND IN AIR UNDER FLUXES. JOINTS WILL BE LEAK TESTED, STRENGTHS AND DUCTILITIES WILL BE DETERMINED AT ROOM AND ELEVATED TEMPERATURES, AND GAP SIZES OPTIMIZED. AGEING AND EMBRITTLEMENT EFFECTS WILL BE EVALUATED. CORROSION BEHAVIOUR OF JOINTS IN WATER ENVIRONMENTS WILL BE EXAMINED ELECTROCHEMICALLY.

THE INSTITUET FUER METALLURGIE UND METALLKUNDE (IMM) OF MUNICH, FRG, WILL COLLABORATE ON A SERIES OF THERMAL AND MECHAMICAL FATIGUE STRENGTH TESTS FOR A RANGE OF LAP AND BUTT JOINTS.

MOREOVER, FRY'S METALS LTD. OF LONDON (UK) WILL PROVIDE ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE THROUGHOUT THIS PROJECT AS WELL AS ASSISTING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUITABLE FLUXES AND JOINING TECHNIQUES AND PRODUCTION METHODS.
