The aim of the project is to undertake in two stages the manufacture and demonstration of the Aesop All Electric Subsea Oil Processing System. Stage 1 will consist of Engineering design and Manufacture, Stage 2 will conclude with Assembly Testing and Demonstration. The oil industry is traditionnally conservative with regard to new technology and therefore the demonstration of the System is necessary to facilitate the commercial exploitation of the technology by proving its technical viability and reliability. The objective is to move towards a first oilfield application of the system through close involvement with oil company operators throughout the project, tailoring the test procedures to suit both the operators and certifying authorities.L%
This reporting period is characterised by Hardy Oil & Gas buying equity in the new Alpha Thames Ltd and signing an agreement with two of Halliburton's business units, Halliburton Energy Development and Brown & Root Energy Services to deploy AlphaPrime technology on a worldwide basis. On the basis of initial information, Hardy's PY-3 field was chosen for AESOP development but the field proved to be commercially (and technically) unsuitable for testing the prototype AESOP. At the AESOP JIP meeting at Kockums on 8th July 1998, it was agreed that the first AESOP module be designed as a demonstration unit and would be tested and demonstrated using Kockums'ship lift facility. Meanwhile, potential offshore fields are being studied and marketing activities continue.
The Aesop System is a complete subsea processing system with significant innovation in all areas: All Electric Power and Control - AESOP uses electricity as the common source for both motive power and control thereby reducing cabling and connection requirements. The removal of the hydraulic element from the supply umbilical will give the system the ability to operate in remote locations, in deeper water, and at greater distances from the control centre. Response to emergency signals is instantaneous.
Modularisation - All production equipment likely to require maintenance is contained within removable modules, which are easily retrieved to the surface. The modules are interconnected via the innovative MATE Connector.
Process - Subsea separation and boosting can drastically alter the economics of marginal field development by reducing both capital and operating costs and increasing the recoverable reserves of a field by up to 20%.
