DISTRIBUTED TEMPERATURE SENSOR

Objective

To determine that a distributed fibre optic temperature sensor (DTS) used as an early warning fire/heat detector can give an improved system for fire detection on offshore oil/gas production platforms. Critical factors to be tested out will be the long term reliability of the system in such environments including the ability of the fibre optic sensing cable to withstand the tough North Sea weather conditions and rough working environment.
The trials was carried out on the Heimdal platform which is operated by ELF Petroleum Norge. The trial started up on 14 November 1996 and was terminated 3 December 1997. The performance of the system was monitored continuously and any alarm event recorded. In addition, monthly tests were made to check performance of alarm functions, cable loss and temperature accuracy. In general the demonstration was successful. It gave much useful experience and information for later actual installations. The software used for identifying a possible fire situation worked well, but some problems were also experienced. The DTS-unit did once in a while make erroneous temperature measurements. This problem appears to have been solved in the newest version of the DTS.
The DTS based system is meant to replace the heat detectors presently in use. One length of fibre cable will be equivalent to a number of point detectors.
This technology is to be tested out on an offshore oil/gas platform to find out if it will give an improved heat detection system for early warning fire alarm systems. In this context the long term reliability of the system in such an environment including the ability of the fibre optic sensing cable to withstand the tough North Sea weather conditions, the corrosive sea air, and the rough working environment on a platform.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
