Objective
The project consists in field testing of a high pressure rotary compressor for natural gas handling. The objective is to replace the reciprocating compressors which are usually installed when flow is not compatible with centrifugal compressors. The reciprocating compressors are of low reliability and require frequent maintenance. They are not compatible with unmanned platforms. The proposed equipment is a single stage peripheral compressor. The application selected is fuel gas compression whenever associated gas is available at pressures which are much lower than that required by the turbines of the turbogenerator.
A 300 kW compressor group has been produced and has been tested with natural gas on a Gaz de France site.
This compressor is probably the most powerful peripheral compressor ever tested in the world. It was shown that this compressor was able to boost from 200 to 500 Am³/h of natural gas from 16 to 20-27 bars, which are figures quite representative of gas turbine injection, one of the most promising application of the REFLECS machine.
The mechanical operation of the peripheral compressor REFLECS was proven to be quite satisfactory. Especially, key technologies, like tandem dry gas seals were succesfully tested in harsh operating conditions like high gas temperature (185 °C)
The REFLECS compressor will soon be added to the PERIFLOW peripheral compressor product line that has been marketed since 1995 by Burton Corblin, who hold a licence for producing and selling peripheral compressors coming out of Bertin's development activities.
It is anticipated that the REFLECS technology will broaden the market of peripheral compressors towards natural gas and light gas compression. A promoting action of this technology is now being carried out jointly by Bertin and Burton Corblin with a view to sell from 3 to 5 REFLECS units within two years.
Innovation
Peripheral compressors are rotary non-volumetric compressors. They are very well adapted to low massflows and high pressures. Their mechanical simplicity and high reliability are well known. Nevertheless, they have never been used for performing high pressure rises because of a poor knowledge of their efficiency and reliability under the mechanical operating conditions implied by such compressions rises.
