RE-ENTRY HORIZONTAL DRILLING USING COILED TUBING

Objective

To drill between three and five horizontal re-entry wells using a coiled tubing drilling system, to demonstrate the technical and economic potential of the system to enhance production of older or marginal fields.
Seven demonstration wells have been drilled within the scope of this project. Coiled tubing drilling bottom hole assemblies have been proven as effective for directional drilling and for monitoring of downhole events such as bottom hole pressure changes while drilling underbalanced.
Coiled tubing drilling offers significant advantages both economic and technical over conventional rotary rig drilling. The use of coiled tubing as a replacement for drill pipe is the first innovative aspect of the project. A re-entry drilling system capable of drilling medium radius and short radius wells out of casings is the second innovative issue. Drilling of multi-lateral well sections from casing whipstocks will further lead to most economic utilization of marginal fields. The coiled tubing, complete with integral wireline, is used to convey the drilling assembly and directional steering tools, and to provide the hydraulic conduit to power the downhole motors. The wireline transmits electric power as well as data between the surface and bottom of the hole. Orientation of the drilling tools will be by an orientation device. The system requires a tubing conveyed window cutting system to cut the re-entry window into the casing or production string. The use of removable whipstocks will allow multilateral wells to be drilled from the same wellbore. The design of the coiled tubing system will allow the fluid circulation to be in a closed system allowing the well to be drilled at a reduced hydrostatic pressure. The project design phase covers the modifications to the bottom hole assembly and the coiled tubing rig. The manufacturing phase covers the manufacture of coiled tubing drilling specific tools. After extensive testing of the system the commissioning phase will consist of the drilling of 3 to 5 wells.
