PREDETERMINED AZIMUTAL BEHAVIOUR PDC BITS

Objective

Demonstration of new PDC drilling bits having quantitative predetermined azimutal behaviour including original neutral (anti-walk) bits. A precise manufacturing technology will be implemented to built these new tools. Following a directional calibration of these tools on a full scale drilling bench, various prototypes will be tested in industrial wells, with define well path to evaluate the reliability of the new technology. This new technology will result in drilling cost reduction especially for offshore operations, long reach wells and horizontal drilling.
Very encouraging. Preliminary field tests.
The project includes five phases :
Phase 1 : Detailed design
- Define bits for field tests
- Produce manufacturing drawings
- Calibration pilot tests and field trials specifications
- Operating specifications of the new bits
Phase 2 :
- Manufacture bits with predefined azimutal behaviour (8"1/2, 12"1/4) for lab and field tests defined is phase 1
- Setup precise control of the manufactured bits following requirement of phase 1 and ISO 9001 specifications Phase 3 : pilot testing
A limited number of tests will be carried out for 7 bits on a highly instrumented full scale drilling bench in order to calibrate these new tool designs and especially to qualify their directional responses to the operating parameters.
Phase 4 : Demonstration
The manufactured and calibrated tools will be tested in instrumented commercial directional wells in various formations according to a set up field procedures defined in Phase 1. Twenty PDC bits in 8"1/2 and 12"1/4 will be tested in deep and deviated sections with proper and reliable directional surveys. Technical supervision of detailed data acquisition will be performed in the field.
Phase 5 : Evaluation, management, reporting
The directional response of the new bits, their steerability, their drilling performances as well as the optimal operating parameters for taking maximum benefit from the new directional tools, will be evaluated.
