Minimising stress inducing factors on cattle during handling and transport to improve animal welfare and meat quality

Objective

Adequate scientific data are kicking in cattle transport on stress inducing factors, such as transport times, vibration levels, and air quality. In order to develop standards on the European level a coordinated research is necessary in line with the key action 5.1.1 so that new data and methods for surveillance and reducing stress will become available. Hence cattle welfare and meat quality will be improved, thereby enhancing the economic competitiveness of producers and abattoirs. The project is broken down into eight work packages. In all the work packages, beside other behavioural and physiological parameters, continuous measurement of heart rate, environmental conditions in the pens, and video recording will be made to determine the adhesiveness of various activities to animal welfare. The partners (scientists and abattoir partners from six countries) have long experiences on animal health and welfare, meat quality, dynamic, measurement technology, transport and logistics.
