Electricity from biomass network: development of bio-electricity through the adoption of advanced technologies and appraisal of perspectives for the utilisation of bio-crude oil (BCO) in engines

Objective

THIS TARGET STUDY IS FOCUSED ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ELBION (ELECTRICITY FROM BIOMASS NETWORK) ADDRESSED TO OVERCOME STILL EXISTING TECNOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL CONSTRAINTS, THAT ACTUALLY DO NOT ALLOW A SUCCESSFULL INTEGRATION OF BIO-ELECTRICITY IN REGIONAL DIMENSION. THE PROPOSAL IS AIMING TO PROMOTE THE PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICITY AND HEAT FROM BIOMASS RESOURCES AND ITS PENETRATION IN RURAL DISTRICTS, THROUGH THE UTILISATION OF BIO-CRUDE-OIL (B.C.O.) FROM FLASH-PYROLYSIS AND ITS UP-GRADED FUELS IN ENGINES|POWER GENERATING SYSTEMS. THE CREATION OF A NETWORK OF SMALL BIO-ELECTRICITY GENERATORS IN RURAL AREAS CAN STIMULATE: NEW JOB CREATION, NEW MARKETS OPENING (ELECTRICITY AND HEAT) TO ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTION TO FOOD IN AGRICULTURE, NEW INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES, NEW SERVICE ACTIVITIES. THE USE OF B.C.O. IN DIESEL IS TODAY CONSIDERED BY EXPERTS VERY PROMISING SOLUTION FOR POWER GENERATION, BOTH FROM ECONOMICAL AND TECHNICAL POINT OF VIEW, ESPECIALLY FOR ENGINE SIZES IN THE RANGE 0.1-40 MWe. AT PRESENT THE SPECIFIC TECHNICAL PROBLEMS REQUIRING FURTHER NEW R&D ACTIONS ARE:
-UP-GRADING OF B.C.O. FOR THEIR USE IN CONVENTIONAL POWER GENERATORS -IMPROVEMENT OF B.C.O. AND DIESEL|STERLING ENGINES SYSTEM ADAPTATION I.E. PILOT IGNITION SYSTEM FOR THE ENGINE START-UP ETC.
-CHAR AND ASH SEPARATION -CHARACTERISATION AND STANDARDISATION OF B.C.O. IN ORDER TO ENSURE AN ADEQUATE SYSTEM RELIABILITY.
THESE 3 TECHNICAL OBJECTIVES SUPPORT|THE FIRST MAIN SCOPE: THE INTEGRATION OF ADVANCED NEW POWER GENERATORS UNITS INTO THE SOCIETY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION, AT REGIONAL LEVEL. TUSCANY (ITALY) AND THRAKI (GREECE) ARE THE REGIONS INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT.
