WEAR AND FATIGUE CHARACTERISTICS OF SURFACE ENGINEERED MATERIALS AS APPLIED TO MULTIPOINT AND SHEAR ACTION CUTTING TOOLS

Cel

This project has confirmed that plasma vapour deposition (PVD) coatings suppress abrasion and limit adhesive wear on saws. However, the coating has little effect on the degradation of the micro-chippage of the tooth tip on both circular and band saws.
THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION OF SURFACE ENGINEERING TECHNIQUES TO MULTIPOINT AND SHEAR ACTION TOOLS HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A MAJOR STEP FORWARD IN THEIR EVOLUTION. THE POTENTIAL OF SURFACE ENGINEERING TECHNIQUES HAS ALREADY BEEN DEMONSTRATED ON SINGLE POINT LATHE TOOLS DRILLS AND PRESS TOOLS.
WIDESPREAD SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS, PARTICULARLY IN THE USA AND JAPAN HAVE BEEN FOUND WHERE ENHANCED PRODUCTIVITY AND TOOL LIFE HAS MORE THAN COMPENSATED FOR THE VERY HIGH SURFACE TREATMENT COSTS.

THE MAJOR OBJECTIVES, WHICH REPRESENT SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES ON CURRENT PRACTICES, ARE TO:
(1) DERIVE SURFACE TECHNIQUES WHICH WILL SUPPRESS THE WEAR AND FATIGUE MECHANISMS RELEVANT TO MULTIPOINT AND SHEAR ACTION CUTTING TOOLS
(2) MODIFY THE SUBSTRATE TO OPTIMISE THE SURFACE PROPERTY
(3) MODIFY TOOL GEOMETRY FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE
(4) ENHANCE PRODUCT VALUE ON RELATIVELY LOW COST CONSUMABLE TOOLS.
