AN INVESTIGATION INTO ENERGY RECOVERY AND WASTE TREATMENT BY ANAEROBIC BIOFILTRATION.

Objective



A DETAILED STUDY OF THE PERFORMANCE OF AN ANAEROBIC BIOFILTER PILOT PLANT TREATING A HIGH STRENGTH WASTE IS TO BE CARRIED OUT OVER TWO YEARS. GAS PRODUCTION, METHANE CONTENT AND TOLERANCE TO CHANGES IN AMBIENT TEMPERATURE AND STRENGTH OF WASTE WOULD BE MEASURED, RELATIVE TO WASTE TREATMENT EFFICIENCY. OBSERVATIONS ON THE ECOLOGY AND MICROBIOLOGY WOULD BE MADE. AT THE END OF THE EXPERIMENTAL PERIOD A DESK DESIGN STUDY WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ASSESS THE ECONOMICS OF THE PROCESS.
THE PILOT WORK AND ADDITIONAL LABORATORY STUDIES WILL ALSO PROVIDE IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION ON THE PROCESS AND MECHANISMS OF ANAEROBIC BIOFILTRATION.
THE STUDY IS TO BE DIVIDED INTO THREE SECTIONS TO RUN CONCURRENTLY. CONSTRUCTION AND COMMISSIONING IS EXPECTED TO TAKE BETWEEN 6 TO 9 MONTHS FROM THE START OF THE PROJECT AND MOST OF THE LABORATORY WORK OF THE PROJECT WILL BE UNDERTAKEN DURING THIS INITIAL PERIOD.
