PV APPLICATIONS IN PUBLIC SCHOOL BUILDINGS

Objective

The main objectives of the project are the following : Demonstration of the viability of PV applications in public buildings in general, and schools in particular. To show the complementarity of thermal and PV applications and how the former can substantially reduce the payback period of the latter. The dissemination effect of that viability. The educational effect among young students of the use of renewable energies. The M-module type PV thermal curtain wall, consists of two coverings separated by a continuous and ventilated air chamber. PV efficiency and thermal comfort are bigger due to air flow.

Project involves two grid connected PV generators, 30 kWp in a new school in Spain and 45 kWp in a refurbished school in Italy. (Total PV= 75 kWp) 27 replication buildings are planned to follow this demo project. Both schools employ energy saving features, including passive solar and natural ventilation. System in Barcelona is based on results from JOULE project, uses BP Saturn modules in a curtain wall with transparent, semi-transparent and PV elements "multifunctional PV-thermal modules". Italian system uses Anit or Helios modules integrated into roof in Tortona to act as air heating collectors for space.
