Objective
The aim and the objectives of the project are :
- to convert an existing 600 MWe power plant, which is currently using coal into a dual fuel installation using a renewable energy source (wood) and a fossil fuel (coal);
- to process waste wood into wood powder as a fuel for electricity and heat production. The electricity is supplied to industrial sites in the nearby area;
- to realize a CO2 reduction as well as resolving a significant waste wood deposition problem;
- to demonstrate an attractive payback period and therefore a large potential for this technology.
Expected results are :
1. Energy saving of 44,320 tonnes of coal every year (28,589 TOE ).
2. Reduction of 110,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.
3. Reduction of 60,000 tonnes of deposited waste wood every year.
4. Reduction of 4,275 tonnes of fly ash every year.
Innovation :
1. First full size power plant (600 MWe) using dual fuel (coal and wood) in Europe.
2. Innovative milling system for the production of wood powder (80 % < 800 um).
3. Innovative burner configuration in existing boiler.
The process involves the following steps :
- Woodchips of 3 cm arrive in containers on site.
- An automated dumping system supplies the reception hopper.
- One hammermill reduces the material to a particle size of 1-4 mm;
- The smaller fraction is separated from the coarser fraction.
- The coarser material is conveyed to two intermediate storage bins which feed a number of mill units.
- The final product is pneumatically transported to a 800 m3 storage silo.
- With primary air the wood powder is transported to 4 wood powder burners. Each burner is able to combust 13.5 MWth (2.5 tonnes wood powder/hour).
- The secondary air supply to the burners is used as cooling air when the wood burners are not in operation and only coal is used as a fuel.
- On average 4.5% of the coal input will be replaced by wood.
- The woodchip input will be 60,000 tonnes yearly.
- Precautions are taken to avoid dust explosions.
