OPTIMIZATION OF DRILLING OPERATIONS [PHASE 2]

Ziel

The aim of the project is to develop new methods to improve the conduct of drilling operations, while using the physical data related to the drilling process. The topics selected to conduct this research are directly related to the making of new hole.
This activity is given priority here, as it uses up to 40% of the time spent on a well. The other basis for this research is in assuming that progress relies on an improved knowledge of downhole physics, until now mostly approached through statistical models. The necessary basis for the expected improvements is the acquisition of models. The areas concerned are for this project:
- the behaviour of the borehole walls as seen through the transmission
losses of torque and weight on bit from surface to the drill bit,
- the directional behaviour of drill strings,
- the behaviour of the drill bit cutting face while drilling.
The main results are:
- the discovery of practical laws for the transmission of torque and weight
on bit,
- computer codes for the simulation in three dimensions, statically and
dynamically, of the bottom hole assemblies directional and vibratory
behaviour,
- a better knowledge of the torque-weight relationships at the bit cutting face.
The main activities of the project are:
- well data acquisition,
- test bench data acquisition,
- interpretation of data,
- integration of results in the conduct of drilling operations. These steps have been prepared by the project nr TH 2024/84 during which bibliographies, physical and numerical modelling and preliminary tests were performed.
These activities are carried out in a specific manner for each of the topics mentioned, except for the well data acquisition which is common to all of them.
WELL DATA ACQUISITION
Drilling data are acquired essentially by specialized teams using data recorders brought to and used on the well site under their direct supervision. Both downhole and surface data are recorded. A complex treatment is afterwards required to put all the needed data in files adapted to the interpretation work pertaining to the other activities.
TEST BENCH DATA ACQUISITION
Such data are acquired in a laboratory environment much less subject to environmental and processnoises.
The test benches involved are:
- a drilling bench for bits up to 6" (152 mm) in diameter able to drill 50 mm long rock samples,
- a reduced scale bottom hole assembly (BHA) model, representing about 50 m length of BHA,
- turbine test benches for static or dynamic measurements. INTERPRETATION OF DATA
The comparison between well and/or bench data and the output of the theoretical models attempting to simulate downhole physics is made systematically. The models are thereafter completed or modified to fit better with the processes observed.
INTEGRATION OF RESULTS IN THE CONDUCT OF DRILLING OPERATIONS
The integration of the results in the daily drilling procedure requires various approaches depending on the topic studied. It will often require the use of computing means and their adaptation to the relatively rough environment of the drilling site. The results will either be integrated in automation processes, or at a lower frequency of occurence, participate in decision makingand equipment selection.
