Objective
The aim of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of a novel concept which involves placing an electrically driven compressor within a pipeline for the purpose of pumping gas through the pipeline. The project will lead to the acquisition of engineering data on gas dynamics, cooling, lubrication, and vibration which can then be used to design a prototype unit for further evaluation in an operating pipeline.
The project involves :
a. The design and manufacture of a prototype compressor and two alternative motor concepts.
b. The design, manufacture, erection, instrumentation, and commissioning of suitable test facilities.
c. The calibration of both motors on dynamometer test stands to establish the motor characteristics when driven by a variable frequency supply.
d. The testing of complete compressor-motor units in carbon dioxide over a range of pressures, speeds, and flow rates, to determine the overall characteristics of the complete unit and its components, and to investigate cooling, lubrication, and vibration.
e. The writing of a full report on the project.
The project is divided into 5 phases :
1. Design and manufacture of first prototype;
2. Design, manufacture, erect and commission test facilities for first unit;
3. Test first unit;4. Design and manufacture second motor;
5. Design and manufacture additional test facilities for second motor;
6. Test the second unit and write a report on the project.
