DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM TO CONTROL BEAN DISEASES IN TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL REGIONS

Cel

An integrated system to control bean diseases is developed which will enable farmers to make better decisions on control measures. Within the system the following diseases will be considered: bean rust, Isariopsis leaf spot, Alternaria leaf spot, antracnose, Fusarium yellows, Rhizoctonia root rot, and Golden mosaic virus. The integrated system will include decisions on the choice of cultivar, on cultural practise as well as on optimal chemical control. Thus it will lead to a reduction of fungicide usage and consequently to a diminution of environmental pollution. The investigations on the soil-borne diseases will be carried out at Cordoba (Spain) in microplots and in growth chambers. At Vicosa (Brazil) field experiments with the relevant leaf diseases will be conducted. Leaf as well as soil-borne diseases will be investigated at Piracicaba (Brazil) using growth chambers and field experiments. Computer modelling, which will be carried out at Giessen (Germany), will start with models for single diseases. These submodels will be combined to form a global model for all diseases involved which in addition will include disease-loss relationships and economical analyses. At the end of the project, a prototype of the computer program should exist which can be used to show the effects of different conditions on decision making. Although field tests of the system are planned in the last season, more validation will be needed later under practical conditions.
