Cell-mediated immunity to schistosomes : evaluation of mechanisms operating against lung stage parasites which might be exploited in a vaccine

SCHISTOSOMIASIS ,CAUSED BY PARASITIC HELMINTHS OF THE GENUS SCHISTOSOMA, AFFLICTS APPROXIMATELY 200 MILLION PEOPLE WORLDWIDE.IN BRAZIL AROUND 10 MILLION PEOPLE ARE INFECTED OR AT RISK.CONTROL MEASURE, INCLUDING THE USE OF MOLLUCICIDES TO KILL THE SNAIL VECTOR,AND MASS CHEMOTHERAPYOF THE HUMAN POPULATION ,HAVE BEEN WIDELY APPLIED BUT WITH LIMITED SUCCESS.THE PATOLOGICAL DAMAGE WHICH RESULTS FROM INFECTION IS A MAJOR PROBLEM,OCCURRING IN AS MUCH AS 20% OF THE INFECTED POPULATION IN BRAZIL.PREVENTION OF INFECTION BY EFFECTIVE VACCINATION WOULD AVOID THESE COMPLICATIONS AND WOULD ALSO DECREASE TRANSMISSION IN ENDEMIC AREAS.THE LONG TERM OBJECTIVE OF OUR RESEARCH IS TO DEVELOP SUCH A VACCINE.
