Value added services for maritime environment

Objective

The VASME Project is the design and development of a voice operated VHF automatic on demand information system for ships and vessels. It will provide real-time access to a nonlimited set of value added services. Some of the possible information packages provided with VAS are: administrative information, commercial information, technical information and navigational support.
The end product of the project will be a VASME demonstration unit(VDU). This system will be able to operate in real-time and under the same conditions (VHF channels) of the current VTS-vessel communications. The VDU will be the common platform for the integration of the different technologies and developments. Some of the most important technologies used in this project are : speaker-independent speech recognition, noise reduction, voice synthesis, relational data bases, real time systems with high computational charge, Advanced Graphical User Interfaces (GUI).
The major purpose of this system is to increase the flow of information exchange between vessels and traffic control towers. The system will offer serviceable information to the vessels and can obtain valuable information from the vessels, such as: identification, origin, destination and cargo type, which normally is not provided voluntarily.
The benefits produced by this system will be a significant contribution to maritime transport safety and traffic management proficiency. From another perspective, the project aspires to enhance existing or future information systems to cover important non-exploited space in the field of value added services for maritime traffic. On the other hand, the goals are to improve maritime traffic control efficiency and increase security in this environment.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
