2 INNOVATIVE SMALL SIZE WIND TURBINE IN FR/DK

Objective

The aim of the project is to demonstrate leading European innovative small size wind turbines concepts - in those projects one turbine in FR and one turbine in DK. The innovative aspects of the 2 concepts are :
- VERGNET : Innovative concept : the conventional steel plate assemblies are replaced by composite plates along with placing the rotor down wind, behind the tower. The mechanical switch control system makes it possible for the turbine to operate on an off-load, whilst maintaining the same rotational speed. 33140 KWH/Y
- HANSTHOLM : Innovative concept : the wind turbine is innovative concerning the rubber hinged rotor, which gives the turbine low noise emissions. 57000 kWH/Y. Payback : 7 years.

OPERATION CONTEXT :
Vergnet : 15 kW, up wind, 2 blades, stall regulated by blade pitch control, rotation speed regulation and start up by two springs in tension (passive mechanism), asynchronous generator, guys tilting tower.
The demonstration project is situated in Narbonne on Vergnet's test facility on a plateau with an annual wind speed of 7.7 m/s. Hanstholm : 22kW, 13 m rotor, 3 blades, traditional Danish wind turbine design, upwind, noise reduction and economy/maintenance optimization, grid connection/stand alone operation option, gearbox and generator/gearless variable speed PMG option.
The wind turbine will be installed in connection to a small farm in Thy, Jutland, where the average wind speed is 5.0 m/s.
ECONOMIC ASPECTS :
Vergnet : employes 50 persons in France and another 20 persons around the world. 120 turbines sold in 1996, turnover 70 mio FF in 1996.
Hanstholm : : was established in 1987 and employes 15 people. The company is also involved in manufacturing wind turbine control systems.

MONITORING :
The following elements are included in the measurement and evaluation programme : Wind speeds - Evaluation of the wind conditions of the sites - Energy production - Technical problems - Utilization of the energy produced.
Data equipment : PC with a screen; AD card; power cell; 1 water gauge; Modem.
