Objective
A Multiwindturbine-system (MWT) consisting of 4 x 75 KW wind turbines will be installed at Vlissingen in order to save electricity used by a coldstore and to prepare the MWT-systems for the market. The aim of such a system is to generate large electrical outputs with the aid of reliable wind turbines, that have outgrown the development stage and can now be delivered on a commercial basis. The estimated annual yield is 520 MWh.
The MWT-system is a constellation of medium sized standardised wind turbines in a large supporting structure. The free standing tubular tower has two cross arms at 27.5m and 45m respectively. At the ends of these arms two wind turbines are located with a capacity of 75 KW each, thus 300 KW in total. The yaw system is located at the base of the mast and thus the whole tower is yawing. The supports consist of tubular sections through which crawling is possible for the inspection and maintenance of the nacelles. The wind turbines are constructed by LAGERWEY and are equipped with glassfiber reinforced rotorblades with passive pitch control. The generators are of asynchronous type and allow simple and safe connection to the electric grid. The cut-in speed is 4 m/s and the cut-out 24 m/s.
The 520 MWh estimated annual yield will be used to drive the compressors of a large coldstore with an annual consumption of 2000 MWh. During winter time when the demand will be less than the productionthen the following possibilities exist:
a. to buffer wind energy by applying undercooling
b. to shut-down some of the wind turbines
c. to feed back energy to the utility network.
Detailed measurements will follow the installation during the demonstration phase and will be used to draw final decisions concerning the control philosophy. The estimated cost per KWh produced is 0.29 HFL, but it is expected that the price in the future will drop to 0.17 HFL or even 0.13 HFL depenting from the market.
For the realisation of the project MULTIWIND will cooperate with BUITENDIJK Staalbouw B.V. for the construction of the tower, and with LAGERWEY B.V. for the wind turbines as well as with TNO, TH-Eindhoven, CALDES and ECN for various studies and measurements.
