Objective
A horizontal axis wind turbine of 100 KW, 20 m diameter, will be constructed, installed and tested in connection with an autonomous electricity grid in order to develop Greek technology in the field of design and manufacture under competitive economic conditions and to demonstrate and prove the economic viability of such units as well as their capability to operate and perform according to design specifications, estimated annual yield at the site of installation: 210 MWh.
A horizontal axis upwind, 3 bladed wind turbine with rated power of 100 KW will be designed, constructed and installed on the island of Skyros, Greece, in order to gain experience and demonstrate the economic viability of such units and their operation and performance according to their design specifications. The cut in windspeed of the turbine is 4,5 m/s, the cut-out 25 m/s and the nominal power is reached at 12 m/s. The asychronous generator has a max. output of 120 KW and will be connected to the 2.5 MW diesel based grid of the island. The estimated annual yield is 210 MWh which corresponds to a fuel saving of 40 Tons. The estimated cost per KWh is 15.6 DRA while conventional is 21.6 DRA. During the demonstration phase, which will last 2 years, it will be possible to evaluate all the figures of this new design. It is a cooperative project between public power corporation (PPC) and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
