Objective
The project aims to cover the basic energy requirements of a shelter which is located on the Flabouri mountain through the use of a WINDSOL 6 kW wind turbine connected with battery storage. It also intends to demonstrate and evaluate the ability of wind to match primary energy needs of similar installations. The estimated annual yield is 10.000 kWh.
Project abandoned due to technical failure.
A WINDSOL 6 KW, 3 bladed windturbine with a diameter 6.5 m has been installed on Parnitha mountain at Flabouri at a height of 1.158 m in order to cover the basic energy needs of a shelter. The electricity is rectified and stored in a battery bank consisting of 17 x 12 V batteries. When the batteries have reached their full capacity, an automatic switch disconnects them from the generator while at the same time other loads are connected; i.e. electric resistance for water heating etc. Energy is needed in the shelter for lights, telecommunications, refrigerator, water pump, heating and provision of hot water. The estimated annual yield is 10.000 KWh with a cost per unit of 22 DRA, while any other conventional solution would cost much more (at least twice as much).
Although the project is carried out by a non-profit Society (Greek Mountain Climbing Society of Acharnes) it can contribute actively for a wide replication of the project in Greece and elsewhere for similar applications and remote areas.
