Objective
Possibilities of small hydropower in Belgium
Phase a : collecting all available data and defining methodology
Phase b : visiting all sites and collecting missing data
Phase c : centralising the data on each site in accessible report
Phase d : global interpretation of the results and redaction of final report of the study
Phase a : collecting all available data and defining methodology : data from industrial statistics, hydrological maps, ordnance maps, Ferrars maps, other inventories of watermills, photographical collections.
Phase b : visiting all sites : following the river, gathering technical information, taking photographs, measuring the sites (architectural part, dam, water-level, head), inventory of machinery, ownership and dam-up rights, historical details e.g. power of old installation.
collecting missing data : copy of the river-atlas (a standard reference in Belgium which contains a drawing of the dam-construction), copy of the land-registerand verification of the ownership, verification of the Regional Plan or possible local plans, contact with the exact level of government (local, provincial, regional or Public Works) responsible for the river to ask for future plans and ask for waterlevel, waterflow...
collecting of available waterflow data : existing waterflow data of rivers under permanent control, determinations of which waterflow measurements have to be undertaken, estimation of the waterflow, based on technical and historical data and tests at random.
look for eventual waterheight marks or determine which waterheights have to be determined.
contact the Government Departement of Monuments concerning a possibleprotection as a monument.
Phase c : centralising the data on each site in accessible report, marshalled according to the (place on the) river with a global estimation of the potential.
Phase d : global interpretation of the results and redaction of final report of the study
