Leptogenesis, Seesaw and GUTs

Ziel

The discovery that neutrino are massive opens a window on physics beyond the Standard Model and the seesaw mechanism provides an elegant theoretical explanation of their lightness compared to the other Standard Model Particles. The data from neutrino mixing experiments point to a new scale of energy that is compatible with Grand Unified Theories expectations. The seesaw mechanism has different phenomenological implications with testable predictions.

An intriguing cosmological consequence is leptogenesis, that provides an attractive explanation for the observed matter-anti matter asymmetry of the Universe. Our research project intends to explore in a comprehensive way all phenomenological predictions of the seesaw mechanism that can help to test it through a comparison with neutrino experiments results and with cosmological observations. A test of the seesaw mechanism should also provide an insight on the underlying fundamental theory for neutrino masses.

Leptogenesis is a key ingredient that offers the possibility to access regions of the seesaw parameter space that escape the conventional experimental investigation. Our research project will thus move along a double arrow that from the observations can lead to the identification of the new theory behind neutrino masses and that from theoretical models can cast light into very early stages of the history of the Universe.
