Working careers and social advancement strategies of migrant women from Maghreb. The cases of Bologna and Naples, Italy.

Objetivo

The proposed research deals with the feminisation of migrant flows in southern Europe and, in particular, investigates the case of migrant women from Maghreb residing in Italy. The research analyses life and professional careers and social advancement strategies of migrant women living in two Italian cities, Naples and Bologna. In doing so, the research intends to provide a further understanding of the dynamics of women's social insertion into local labour markets and urban spaces in Europe.

The research takes into account four types of professional strategies as representative examples of the careers of the migrant women residing in Italy: domestic workers, business women, social workers and prostitutes. With reference to these professional positions, the research seeks to understand the extent to which women's constraints and opportunity structures mutually interact together within women's life trajectories, drawing on a multifaceted set of social networks, personal skills and individual strategies. The research shows the way in which, far from being subordinate and passive actors, women play a role as protagonists in migratory movements. In this perspective, the research seeks to demonstrate how the act of migrating has the potential for fostering relevant changes in women's lives and in those of the people surrounding them.

The proposed research is intended to enlarge my research interests and to re-connect my work to that undertaken by a broader community of scholars and practitioners alike. In particular, the research training will be devoted to developing a Euro-Mediterranean dimension of inquiry and debate over issues of gender and international migration. In doing so, the research fellowship will provide a unique opportunity to enhance my research profile as independent researcher actively contributing to academic debates and to the progress in migration studies.
