THERMAL TRANSPORT IN CORRELATED MATERIALS

Cel

The goal is the physics of strongly correlated systems (SCES) using the heavy fermion matter. New materials in the last decade appear with unexpected properties. They were an important boost in the development of theoretical concepts. As excellent crystals can be grown, they are particularly suitable for the studies of low temperature properties. The simplicity in the complexity is that they are governed by their heavy fermion quasiparticles. Fine continuous pressure or magnetic field tunings open the possibility to explore different ground states as the cascade from antiferromagnetism (or ferromagnetism) to paramagnetism with often interplay with superconductivity or metal insulator transition.

Our main purpose is to perform a new generation of transport measurements (electric and thermal) to give a sound basis on the role in instabilities of magnetism (spin and orbital ordering or dynamics) and charge localisation (Fermi surface) The programme involves a new instrumentation:
- thermal transport under pressure (P) using the pressure expertise of CEA/SPSMS laboratory
- very low temperature thermal conductivity down to 10mK with the very low temperature knowledge of CNRS/CRTBT.
It will extend the potentiality of high pressure techniques. The P studies will focus on quantum magnetic and superconducting instabilities on cerium, ytterbium, samarium and uranium compounds. The thermal conductivity experiment will concentrate on the determination of new superconductors (order parameter, successive phases). The complementary between Tokyo and Grenoble will favour also to explore new problems of low dimensional magnetism. Our results will lead to develop high pressure techniques, to precise the link between sensitive transport probes and microscope one and to new information on quantum phase transition.
