Skill-based Inspection and Assembly for Reconfigurable Automation Systems

Cel

Motivation:
Today, large-scale manufacturing facilities are characterized by a high degree of automation whereas the reconfiguration of these complex production processes is accomplished by extensive engineering. With increasing product variants and shorter product cycles, the dynamic reconfiguration clearly is a key technology. Current production engineering tools maintain their own models of equipment capabilities which leads to problems of consistency and scalability.

Objectives:
The main project objective is to facilitate dynamic reconfiguration of complex production processes. To this end, the novel concept of skill-based manufacturing is proposed, i.e. production units with embedded knowledge about their skills being able to interact in order to solve a given manufacturing task. Three scientific and technical objectives have been identified: skill-aware components (sensors/actuators with embedded knowledge about their skills), skill-serving (matching production requirements and component skills for dynamic reconfiguration) and skill-mining (real-time query of capabilities of production facility).

Innovation:
The approach of skill-based production will trigger innovation along the whole chain of manufacturing. Information technology will no longer only be used for the control of production facilities but also for their set-up and reconfiguration. All manufacturing devices will be equipped with embedded intelligence enabling interaction and co-operation between them.

Impact:
The collaboration of research institutes (3), SMEs (3) and global players (2) will promote the idea of skill-based manufacturing, thus contributing to the transformation of industry towards high-added value organisations. In the future, additional services such as web-based configuration tools will open new markets. By developing the technology and preparing standardisation issues the European manufacturing industry will increase its competitive edge.
