THE APPLICATION OF HOLLOW-SPINDLE TECHNOLOGY IN THE WOOL INDUSTRY

Obiettivo

TO GENERATE RECOMMENDED MANUFACTURING SPECIFICATIONS FOR HO-LOW-SPINDLE YARNS, FOR CONVERSION VIA WEFT KNITTING AND WARP KNITTING, TO ENSURE OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE DURING SPINNING, FABRIC MANUFACTURE, CONFECTION AND WEAR.

THE WORK WILL BE UNDERTAKEN IN THREE OVERLAPPING STAGES.

PHASE 1
THE MANUFACTURURE AND TESTING OF A RANGE OF HOLLOW-SPINDLE YARNS TO PROVIDE RECOMMENDED STANDARD PARAMETERS FOR COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION. THIS WILL INVOLVE VARYING MACHINE, FIBRE AND FILAMENT PARAMETERS, THE DETERMINATION OF THE EFFECT OF SPINNING FROM SLIVER AND FROM ROVING AND THE EFFECT OF DOUBLING THE SINGLES YARN.
PILOT FABRIC MANUFACTURE, FINISHING, AND TESTING WILL TAKE PLACE AT THIS STAGE TO DETERMINE THE CORRELATION BETWEEN YARN PROPERTIES AND FABRIC PROPERTIES.
HIGH SPEED PHOTOGRAPHY WILL BE USED TO STUDY THE DYNAMICS OF FIBRE, AIR AND MACHINE COMPONENTS, IN THE YARN FORMATION ZONE, AND THE YARN STRUCTURE WILL BE EXAMINED USING OPTICAL AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPY TO ASSIST IN PROCESS OPTIMISATION.
THE DATA GENERATED IN THIS PHASE WILL STAND ALONE AND BE MADE AVAILABLE TO INDUSTRY IMMEDIATELY AS WELL AS PROVIDING A BASIS FOR A PROCESS OPTIMISATION MODEL FOR USE IN PHASE 2.

PHASE 2
THE MANUFACTURE OF HOLLOW-SPINDLE YARNS FROM 100% WOOL AT THE OPTIMUM SETTINGS FOR WEFT KNITTING INTO FABRICS OR GARMENTS FOR ASSESSMENT IN COMPARISON WITH SIMILAR GOODS MANUFACTURED FROM RING AND ROTOR SPUN YARNS. FOUR MAIN MARKET AREAS WOULD BE EXAMINED, DOUBLE-JERSEY DRESS GOODS, FULLY FASHIONED KNITWEAR, CUT AND SEW KNITWEAR, AND MENS HOSE. IN ADDITION A SMALL SCALE TRIAL WOULD BE CARRIED OUT ON WARP-KNITTING MACHINERY.

PHASE 3
INFORMATION TRANSFER.
THE INFORMATION PRODUCED IN PHASES 1 AND 2 WOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE TO INDUSTRY VIA A SYMPOSIUM, SEMINARS WITH INTERESTED MANUFACTURERS AND APPROPRIATE PUBLICATIONS.
