GARMENT PHYSIOLOGY AND CONSTRUCTION: EVALUATION AND OPTIMIZATION OF THERMOPHYSIOLOGICAL COMFORT.

Objetivo

TO PROVIDE BROAD BASED BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE PHYSIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF GARMENTS AND TO DEVELOP GUIDELINES WHICH ENABLE TEXTILE AND GARMENT MANUFACTURERS WITHIN THE EEC TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THEIR PRODUCTS WITH REGARD TO WEAR COMFORT.

1. SURVEY OF LITERATURE DEALING WITH THERMOPHYSIOLOGICAL COMFORT SENSATIONS OF MAN. THIS SURVEY WILL SHOW WHICH GAPS - RELEVANT TO THE PROJECT'S AIM - ARE TO BE FILLED.
2. EXAMINATION OF ACCURACY OF EXISTING PREDICTIVE MODELS ON THERMOPHYSIOLOGICAL COMFORT OF VARIOUS TYPES OF GARMENTS WITH PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT AGE AND SEX IN RELATION TO TYPE AND AMBIANCE OF ACTIVITY, AS WELL AS CLIMATIC CONDITIONS ACCORDING TO SEASON. FOR THIS, WEAR TESTS WILL BE CONDUCTED WITH SUBJECTS ENCLOSED IN CLIMATIC CHAMBERS UNDER CONTROLLED CLIMATIC AND ACTIVITY CONDITIONS TO ESTABLISH CORRELATIONS BETWEEN BIOPHYSICAL FUNCTIONS OF THE BODY ON THE ONE HAND, AND THERMOPHYSIOLOGICAL SENSATIONS OF PEOPLE OF BOTH SEXES AGED BETWEEN 30 AND 60, SUBDIVIDED INTO 10 YEAR PERIODS, ON THE OTHER HAND.

3. FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF MEASURING METHODS TO DETERMINE SPECIFIC TEXTILE DATA DESCRIBING THERMOPHYSIOLOGICAL COMFORT SENSATIONS UNDER NON-STATIONARY WEAR CONDITIONS CHARACTERIZED BY WEARER'S SWEAT PULSES. INTEGRATION OF THESE DATA ON NON'STATIONARY HEAT AND MOISTURE TRANSFER WITHIN CLOTHING INTO THE EXISTING PREDICTIVE MODELS FOR EVALUATION OF CLOTHING WEAR COMFORT. VERIFICATION OF THESE CORRELATIONS BY SYSTEMATIC SERIES OF MEASUREMENTS ON TEXTILES AND WEAR TESTS WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO MAINTENANCE OVER TIME OR VARIATION OF THIS TEXTILE DATA DURING WEAR OR CLEANING PROCESSES.
4. INTEGRATION OF SPECIFIC TEXTILE DATA ON COMFORT SENSATIONS FROM TEXTILES IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE SKIN AS MEASURED AND EVALUATED IN PART 2 OF PROJECT BY SHIRLEY INSTITUTE INTO EXISTING PREDICTIVE MODELS FOR EVALUATION OF WEAR COMFORT. VERIFICATION OF THESE CORRELATIONS BY WEAR TESTS WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO STATE OF THE TEXTILE AND OF SKIN.
5. DEVELOPMENT OF A SIMPLE MEASURING METHOD TO DETERMINE DEGREE OF MOISTURE PERMEABILITY OF A FABRIC, FOR USE BY MANUFACTURER TO CONTROL PRODUCTION.

6. DEVELOPING TRI-DIMENSIONAL MODELS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLOTHING FOR USE AS EXAMPLE MODELS FOR THE INDUSTRY, ON WHICH INDIVIDUAL CONSTRUCTIONAL PARAMETERS WILL BE MODIFIED FOLLOWING RESULTS OF RESEARCH WORK OF PART 3 OF PROJECT CARRIED OUT BY CETIH AND BCC. BY MEASUREMENTS WITH THE SKIN MODEL, THE THERMOREGULATORY MODEL OF MAN AND WITH THE MEASURING METHODS DEVELOPED IN PARAS 3 & 4, THE IMPACT OF THESE MODIFICATIONS ON COMFORT WILL BE DETERMINED.
7. COMBINATION OF ALL THESE RESULTS INTO A CLEAR AND SIMPLE CORRELATION SYSTEM, SHOWING HOW AND TO WHAT EXTENT VARIATIONS IN CUT AND PATTERN AFFECT WEARER'S COMFORT
