THE ANAEROBIC CONVERSION OF AGRICULTURAL WASTES TO CHEMICALS OR GASES

Obiettivo



AGRICULTURAL WASTES -ANIMAL EXCRETA AND BEDDINGS, CROP RESIDUES, OR RESIDUES FROM PROCESSING OF CROPS OR ANIMALS FOR HUMAN FOOD REPRESENT A VAST RESOURCE OF ORGANIC MATERIAL.. THE CONVERSION OF THESE MATERIALS TO METHANE HAS BEEN A TOPIC OF RESEARCH IN THE DEPARTMENT FOR MANY YEARS, BUT THERE ALSO EXIST POSSIBILITIES OF CONVERSION OF FIBROUS OR STARCHY WASTES DIRECTLY TO ACIDS OR ALCOHOL BY THE USE OF PURE, OR DEFINED-MIXED CULTURES OF ANAEROBIC BACTERIA ISOLATED FROM THE RUMEN OR ANAEROBIC DIGESTERS. THESE PRODUCTS COULT BE USED AS CHEMICAL FEEDSTOCKS. THE DEPARTMENT HAS MANY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN GROWTH AND METABOLISM OF ANAEROBIC BACTERIA IN BATCH AND CONTINUOUS CULTURES, UP TO PILOT-PLANT SCALE. BACTERIA CAPABLE OF BREAKDOWN OF DIFFERENT SUBSTRATES TO DESIRED PRODUCTS WOULD BE ISOLATED AND THEIR GROWTH STUDIED SO AS TO OPTIMISE PRODUCT FORMATION, AND THE POSSIBLE LARGE-SCALE USES OF THE PROCESSES EVALUATED. PRE-TREATMENT OF SUBSTRATES, EITHER BY CHEMICAL, PHYSICAL OR BIOLOGICAL METHODS (E.G. A TWO-STAGE MICROBIAL DEGRADATION) TO INCREASE YIELDS OR RATES OF REACTIONS WOULD ALSO BE INVESTIGATED.
