RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTO HIGH PERFORMANCE REFRACTORY MATERIALS INCORPORATING SIALON CERAMICS, AND SIALON CERAMIC COATINGS.

Objectif

TO DEVELOP AND ADVANCED REFRACTORY MATERIAL WITH IMPROVED CHEMICAL AND EROSION RESISTANCE AT HIGH TEMPERATURES, TO ENHANCE THE PERFORMANCE OF CONVENTIONAL MATERIALS BY APPLYING SIALON CERAMIC WEAR RESISTANT COATINGS.

THE PROJECT WILL CONSIST OF 3 PHASES.
DURING THE FIRST PHASE A RANGE OF B' SIALON GRAINS, WITH VARYING DEGREES OF AL AND O SUBSTITUTION IN THE B CRYSTAL LATTICE, WILL BE PREPARED BY REACTING SI3N4, AL2O3 AND ALN AT HIGH TEMPERATURE IN A NITROGEN ATMOSPHERE. ALN POLYTYPE MATERIALS WILL ALSO BE PREPARED FOLLOWING A SIMILAR ROUTE.

IN THE SECOND PHASE, THE B' SIALON AND POLYTYPE GRAIN WILL BE INCORPORATED IN THEE REFRACTORY MATERIALS BY MECHANICAL MIXTING. A MONOLITHIC REFRACTORY BODY WILL BE FORMED BY FIRING THE MIXTURES. COST SAVING FABRICATION METHODS WILL BE INVESTIGATED, SUCH AS TAMPED AND FIRED SIALON COATINGS ON COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE REFRACTORY MATERIALS AND INCORPORATING SIALON GRAINS IN GLAZED COATINGS. AT THIS STAGE, CONTINUOUS CASTING DIES AND SEMICONDUCTOR PROCESSING DIES WILL BE FABRICATED IN A VARIETY OF DENSE MONOLITHIC SIALON MATERIALS AND SUBJECTED TO LABORATORY AND IN-SERVICE EVALUATION.

IN THE THIRD PHASE, STANDARD EVALUATION SPECIMENS WILL BE TESTED IN A RANGE OF MOLTEN FERROUS AND NON-FERROUS ALLOYS AND THEIR ASSOCIATED SLAGS IN BOTH DYNAMIC AND STATIC CORROSION/EROSION CONFIGURATIONS. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE CONTAINER MATERIAL WEIGHT LOSS, AND DIMENSIONAL CHANGES AND CHEMICAL STABILITY MELT AND CONTAINER WILL BE INVESTIGATED. POWERFUL ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES SUCH AS EDAX, X-RAY DIFFRACTION AND OPTICAL AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPY WILL BE USED TO CARRY OUT THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISATIONS.
THE UNIVERSITY OF WARWICH (UK) IS A POSSIBLE COLLABORATOR IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THIS PROJECT.
