THE TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF DYNAMIC COMPACTS OF ALUMINIUM-BASED POWDERS.

Cel

THE DEVELOPMENT OF NOVE-BEARING MATERIALS AND ANTI-WEAR COATINGS MADE BY THE NEWLY PERFECTED TECHNIQUE OF DYNAMIC COMPACTION.

THE PROJECT IS DIVIDED INTO THREE PARTS:

- MANUFACTURE OF DIFFERENT COMPOSITIONS OF COMPACT;
- TESTING OF THE COMPACTS TO OPTIMIZE THE FORMULATION OF THE COMPACTS;
- COATING THE MOST PROMISING COMPACTS ON VARIOUS STEEL SPECIMENS AND ASSESSING THEIR PERFORMANCE.

IN THE FIRST STAGE, A RANGE OF COMPACTS WILL BE MADE FROM BOTH PURE ALUMINIUM AND A PRECIPITATION-HARDENING ALLOY (TO ALLOW MATRIX HARDNESS TO BE VARIED BY HEAT TREATMENT), INCORPORATING DIFFERENT SOLID LUBRICANTS, SUCH AS LEAD, GRAPHITE AND MOLYBDENUM DISUPHIDE, AND VARIOUS HARD SUBSTANCES SUCH AS STEEL AND MINERAL POWDERS. WHEN THE TESTING OF THESE INITIAL COMPACTS IS COMPLETE, THE MOST PROMISING OF THEM WILL BE SELECTED FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT, BY MODIFYING THE AMOUNTS OF POWDER USED UNTIL THE OPTIMUM FORMULATION IS ACHIEVED. WEAR RATES AND FRICTION COEFFICIENT WILL BE MEASURED AT VARIOUS SPEEDS AND LOADS USING A "PIN-ON-RING" APPARATUS UNDER BOTH DRY AND LUBRICATED CONDITIONS. WEAR RATES AND SCUFFING RESISTANCE OF THE COMPACTED ALUMINIUM PIN AND THE STEEL RING WILL BE RELATED TO THE PROPERTIES OF THE PIN'S CONSTITUENTS - HARDNESS, SIZE, SHAPE, STRENGTH ETC., AND TO ANY SURFACE MODIFICATIONS PRODUCED DURING THE TEST. FOR THIS, A FULLY EQUIPPED METALLOGRAPHIC LABORATORY TOGETHER WITH A SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE WITH FULL ANALYTICAL FACILITIES WILL BE AVAILABLE.

DURING THE FINAL PHASE OF THIS PROJECT, THE FORMULATIONS WHICH PERFORM BEST IN THE PIN-ON-RING TEST WILL BE COATED ONTO STEEL SHELLS AND COMPARED IN A SINPLE BEARING-TEST-RIG WITH CONVENTIONAL COPPER BASED BEARINGS, FOR WEAR AND SCUFFING RESISTANCE ASSESSMENT.

THE FIRST PHASE OF THIS PROJECT ON THE MANUFACTURE OF DIFFERENT COMPOSITIONS OF COMPACT MATERIAL WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN FULL COLLABORATION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL AND INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING, THE QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY, BELFAST (IRELAND).
