RICH METALLIC AND CERAMIC COATINGS FOR SUBSTITUTION OF CHROMIUM IN HIGH TEMPERATURE TECHNOLOGY.

Objetivo

TO REDUCE THE USE OF CHROMIUM BY DEVELOPING SILICON-RICH COATINGS HAVING OPTIMIZED HIGH TEMPERATURE CORROSION RESISTANCE.

THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME DEALS WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF SILICON-RICH HIGH TEMPERATURE CORROSION RESISTANT COATINGS. THE WORK IS DIVIDED INTO TWO MAIN PARTS COVERING METALLIC COATINGS BASED ON THE NI-CR-SI-X SYSTEMS (X=AL, TI, TA, HF, Y, ETC.) AND CERAMIC COATINGS CONSISTING MAINLY OF SIO2, SIC AND SI3N4.

CERAMIC COATINGS WILL BE PRODUCED BY 'SOL-GEL' AND PLASMA ASSISTED VAPOUR DEPOSITION, (PAVD) PROCESSES. THE INITIAL EMPHASIS WILL BE ON SIO2, SIC AND SI3N4, COATINGS PRODUCED BY PAVD AND ON SIO2 AND A MODIFIED SILICA ('GEL-GLASS') COATINGS APPLIED BY 'SOL-GEL' TECHNIQUES.

SUCH PARAMETERS AS COATING DENSITY, COATING/SUBSTRATE ADHESION, COATING THICKNESS WILL BE INVESTIGATED TO OPTIMIZE MECHANICAL AND CORROSION RESISTANT PROPERTIES.

LASER GLAZING POST-COATING TREATMENT WILL BE USED TO IMPROVE DENSIFICATION, ADHESION AND DUCTIBILITY. LASER TREATMENTS WILL BE STUDIED AS A FUNCTION OF POWER, SCAN SPEED, PRE-AND POST-HEAT AND OF THE AREA HEATED.

IN ADDITION, OVERGROWTH BY A THERMALLY GROWN OXIDE TO INCORPORATE THE CERAMIC COATING WILL BE INVESTIGATED.

AN EVALUATION OF COATING PERFORMANCE WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN ENVIRONMENTS RELEVANT TO GAS TURBINES, POWER PLANT BOILERS, COAL CONVERSION SYSTEMS AND PETROCHEMICAL PLANTS.

THE WORK WILL BE SUPPORTED BY:
- THERMOCHEMICAL AND KINETIC STUDIES OF SCALE FORMATION ON THE COATING ALLOY SYSTEM;
- AN INVESTIGATION OF THE MECHANICAL AND CHEMICAL STABILITY OF THE COATINGS;
- A CHARACTERIZATION OF THERMO-MECHANICAL PROPERTIES;
- AN ASSESSMENT OF CHEMICAL AND MECHANICAL COATING/SUBSTRATE COMPATIBILITY;
- USE OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING METHODS.

THE CENTRAL MATERIALS LABORATORY OF BROWN BOVERI & CO. (FRG), LEDERMANN GMBH, (FRG), IMPERIAL COLLEGE (UK) AND AERE HARWELL (UK) WILL ALL BE INVOLVED AT VARIOUS STAGES OF THIS PROJECT.
