DEVELOPMENT OF SUBMICROGRAIN TUNGSTEN CARBIDE-COBALT-TYPE HARDMETALS.

Objective

PRODUCTION OF SINTERED METALS, BY CONVENTIONAL POWDER TECHNOLOGICAL MEANS, WITH GREATER HARDNESS THAN IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE AND WITH IMPROVED RUPTURE STRENGTH AND CRITICAL-STRESS INTENSITY FACTORS.

IN THIS PROJECT THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS WILL BE INVESTIGATED:

- STUDY ON ULTRAFINE POWDERS OF TUNGSTEN CARBIDE MIXED WITH SUCH BINDERS AS COBALT AND NICKEL. THE GRANULOMETRY OF THE ULTRAFINE POWDERS AND THEIR CHEMICAL COMPOSITION INCLUDING TRACE ELEMENT ANALYSIS WILL BE MADE;
- INVESTIGATION ON GRAIN GROWTH INHIBITORS, THEIR ROLE, LIKELY CONCENTRATION AND CHEMICAL RELATIONSHIP WITHIN THE BINDER. THE AIM WILL BE TO FIND INHIBITORS WHICH LEAST EFFECT THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE ALLOYS;
- STUDY OF THE MANUFACTURING PARAMETERS SUCH AS MILLING AND SINTERING, AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON GRAIN GROWTH;
- EXAMINE THE EFFECTS OF SUBSTITUTING COBALT BY COBALT-NICKEL ALLOYS OR PURE NICKEL AND DEVELOP A PRODUCTION PROCESS FOR SUCH POWDER ALLOYS;
- CHARACTERIZE THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THESE ALLOYS;
- INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION OF SUCH SINTERED METAL ALLOYS TO METAL CUTTING TOOLS.

THE UNIVERSITE LIBRE DE BRUXELLES (ULB), BELGIUM, WILL ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN THE PROJECT IN THE OF THE INHIBITORS AND IN THE METALLURGICAL INVESTIGATIONS.
